Create a New Post in WordPress

From your WordPress dashboard, or admin panel, you can create new posts and manage existing ones from the gray sidebar on the left side of your screen.

  1. wp_dashboard_sidebarClick the “Posts” tab on the left. You’ll see a dropdown of options becomes available to you
  2. To create a new post, click “Add New.” Click “All Posts” to view and edit the archive of all the posts on your site.
  3. Enter a title for your post in the title field. This will appear at the top of your post once published, and it will also default to the page URL. You can use the permalink editor to change this to a more specific, shorter or more keyword-specific URL if desired.
  4. Create your post content within the text editor, or you can copy and paste it from another source. If copying and pasting from Microsoft Word, you may experience some formatting issues. It’s better to copy from a much simpler text editor – Notepad, for example. Format your text and add links during this step.
  5. To add graphics, click “Add Media.” See “How do I add a photo?” for further instruction.

wp_publish_columnCategories, Tags and Publishing
On the right side of your screen, you’ll see several sidebars that give you advanced options for creating your post. These will allow you to categorize your posts, assign tags and preview your posts before publication.

  1. The “Categories” sidebar will allow you to properly categorize and index your posts. You can quickly add new categories here by clicking “Add New Category.” You can also manage your categories in the categories drop down option that appears under “Posts” in the sidebar on the left of your screen.
  2. “Tags” are great tools for associating keywords with your posts and another way to help you categorize and organize them. Separate tags by commas.
  3. In the “Publish” sidebar, you can save drafts and preview your post before making it visible to users. It is here you can adjust the date of publication, as well.
  4. When you’re happy with everything, click “Publish” to make the post live on your site.

If you would like to allow or disallow comments to your post, you can do so from the “Discussion” box which rests in the center column below the text editor and SEO features.
